Synonyme: Abrus abrus, Abrus minor, Abrus pauciflorus
Abrus precatorius, known commonly as jequirity, Crab’s eye, rosary pea, precatory pea or bean, John Crow Bead, Indian licorice. Perennial tropical vine native all through the plains of India and into Ceylon, East Africa, also Florida. Fascinating vine with flowers of purple, seeds bicolored red and black. The raw seed is TOXIC, containing a toxalbumin known as “abrin.” Not for internal or external use! Ingestion of a single seed, well chewed, can be fatal to both adults and children. This plant is also poisonous to horses.
