Description

Sage is a perennial herb, the plants start producing flowers from the second year onwards. Classic sage has been grown for centuries as a culinary and medicinal herb. Perennial use is possible, although it is better to sow every other year. Sage leaves can be used fresh and dried. It is a well-known medicinal herb that can ease sore throats and help you sleep better. Sage is a spice used for cooking and healing and the leaves can be used both fresh and dried. This herb is effective against sore throat and is commonly known as soporific. Insects and butterflies, on the contrary, become hyperactive after consuming sage.

Sow seeds 3mm (1/8″) deep, and keep the soil just moist, not wet. Thin or transplant to 45-60cm (18-24″) apart. In spring, trim established plants back by a third to encourage new growth. Once the flowers have finished in June/early July, trim the plants back again. A second bloom sometimes follows, and this pruning will keep plants bushy and compact. After a few years, sage bushes can become quite large. Keep in check by pruning.
