Description
Family: Phytolaccaceae
Genus: Phytolacca
Species: Americana
American Pokeweed, Inkberry, Vinobojka
Deciduous shrubby, medicinal and multipurpose plant. It spreads quite quickly, and grows 2-3 m. The root, leaf, and berries are used for medicinal purposes – the whole plant is extremely poisonous, but after heat treatment, all toxicity is destroyed. The most poisonous is the seed in the berry, so it is always necessary to throw it out, a maximum of 10 berries can be eaten per day – without the pit. Berries are used to color wine and food, and they are also used for writing because the color is strong, so they are used as ink. A salve against varicose veins is prepared from the berries, which is more effective than any industrial salve.
