Description

Family: Cucurbitaceae
Genus: Momordica
Species: Charantia
Karela

Member of the gourd family, It develops a large succulent tuberous rootstock from which it produces annual vines each year. The fruits have spikes on the surface and contain several seeds covered in a sweet sticky pulp ( the only part of the fruit that should be eaten as the seeds and skin are poisonous to various degrees). The fruits burst when ripe, the leaves are also edible and are used in much the same way as spinach leaves (steamed). This curious vine was introduced to Europe in 1568 from the tropical regions of Asia and Africa, where it was used medicinally to treat wounds.

Direct sow seeds outdoors after the last spring frost in a prepared seedbed. Soak seeds for 24 hours before planting and sprout in warm, moist paper towels to improve germination. This vine requires support and prefers warm soils.
