Description
Phoenix canariensis originates from the Canary Islands where it is an endemic species, but thanks to cultivation it has spread to warm areas around the world. Specimens can be found from London to Sydney, Phoenix canariensis is a palm that can grow into a tree 12 or more rarely up to 15 meters high. The unbranched trunk reaches a diameter of up to 100 cm. The leaves are bright green, pinnately compound. Phoenix canariensis is a dioecious plant. It requires open, full sun exposure. It is resistant to low temperatures down to -10 °C. It is best suited to fertile soil, but it is not picky and can grow successfully on any other soil, better than any other palm species, which makes it the most commonly grown ornamental palm species in the world. Although it grows best in full sun, in loose loamy soil, it can tolerate a wide range of conditions, including deep shade and a wide range of soil types including sand and heavy clay. Phoenix canariensis has the unique ability to tolerate both severe drought and flooding.
