Vervain

Vervain has a long association with witchcraft and as a holy herb. It was employed by the Romans in sacrifices and in the Middle Ages to ward off the Devil. The plant was said to have been found at Calvary and to have been used to treat Christ on the cross. In the eighteenth century it was used to treat over thirty ailments, hence the name Simples Joy. The herb is used just before flowering. Was used as a nervine to treat depression. It was used as a fever herb to treat ulcers and pleuritis. As a  poultice, it is effective for headaches and rheumatism. Applied externally to wounds. Used in homeopathy.


Sowing: Cold Stratify (chill seeds at 4-6°C) for 10 days prior to sowing. Fill the seedling tray with seed compost and pat down. Lightly sow seed on the surface and only just cover with a fine layer of vermiculite. Mist with water spray. Place the tray at 16-19°C, a windowsill or heated greenhouse is ideal. Germination 1-2 months. Transplant seedlings when large enough to handle 8cm pots. Acclimatize and plant out after the danger of frost has passed. Pinch back when first planted to encourage branching. Water deeply to encourage root growth. If sown early it will flower in the same year. Cut and come again variety.
