Butterfly Weed
Plant produces beautiful clusters of orange flowers, this is a great plant for a sunny location in a dry area. Mature plants in ideal locations can make as many as 20 stems at an average height of 2’. Butterfly Weed needs a drier, well-drained location to successfully seed into and grow well. Plant is known for attracting an array of beneficial insects such as bumblebees, ladybugs, hummingbirds, and most importantly the endangered Monarch butterfly. Butterfly Milkweed is grown as a perennial flowering plant that will return each year from it’s deeply established root system.
Sowing: Sow into moist sand and cold stratify. Move to frigerate for 4 weeks. Then move to 20°C for germination. Germination takes 21-28 days. After germination grows on in cooler conditions. Transplant seedlings when large enough to handle to 8cm pots. Acclimatize and plant out once danger of frost has passed.
It can be sown directly in autumn where the seed will be naturally stratified.
