Description

Rose Milkweed, Red Milkweed, Marsh Milkweed, Swamp Milkweed
Asclepias is a perennial herbaceous native wildflower. It’s perfect for home landscaping, butterfly garden or prairie meadow, and it attracts for monarchs, hummingbirds and honeybees as well. Asclepias Speciosa grows upright up to 40 inches tall featuring sturdy stems with velvety, oblong, grayish leaves and blooming with round, 3 inches across clusters of fragrant, pinkish-white to pinkish-purple, star-like flowers all summer long. People have also used milkweed for fiber, food, and medicine. It is a very versatile plant that is easily grown from flower seeds ( the cold treatment will help to break the dormancy of the seed ).

Sowing Indoors: Stratify in late winter for 3-6 weeks by placing moist seeds in a plastic bag and store in the refrigerator. 6- 8 weeks before the last frost, remove pre-chilled seeds from the refrigerator and sow ¼ to ½ inch apart in pots; barely cover and thoroughly mist the surface. Secure containers with plastic covering to retain moisture while seeds germinate keeping about 75°F. Water from the bottom once germination has occurred. Sowing Outdoors: Direct sow early spring while cool or late fall, as winter will provide natural stratification for the seeds to emerge in spring.
