Centaurea cyanus, Cornflower, Bachelor’s Button

 

Easy-to-grow from seeds, this annual makes a great addition to the summer border. Cornflowers are especially nice in traditional cottage gardens, and they make an excellent cut flower. Attractive to bees and butterflies. Plants prefer full sun and partial shade, they tolerate a wide variety of soils as long as it drains well with moderate water, but the plants can tolerate drought.


Sowing:  Indoors before the last frost for early flowering. Sow seeds in moist seed compost, cover with a fine sprinkling of soil and keep the compost moist. Seeds germinate at 15-20°C, germination in 14-21 days. Plant out the following spring. Can sow directly outside after frost and when temperature across 15°C into raked soil 3mm deep in drills 30cm apart.
