Description

Praecitrullus fistulosus, commonly known as Tinda, Indian squash, round melon, Indian round gourd, apple gourd, Indian baby pumpkin

The very tender and tasty fruit is flat and round in shape and weighs 3 to 4 ounces at harvest. Prolific vines grow 40 to 50 inches long and have hair on the stems and leaves. Flowering begins at 30 to 35 days and the first harvest follows 15 to 20 days later. Prepared in India in a number of ways: cooked with curry or served with eggplant, peas, potatoes, or other vegetables. Good source of Vitamin A. The flesh is cooked and used like a pumpkin or winter melon, and the seeds can be roasted and eaten like sunflowers. It is great for pickles and chutneys and the fruit stores for months like pumpkins do. Not really a gourd, it is more closely related to watermelons. Open-pollinated. 58-60 days.

Sowing: soak seeds overnight, sow 2 to 3 seeds at a depth of about an inch (2-3 cm) and keep them damp. The seed will germinate for 2-4 weeks depending on temperature. After germination plants can be watered once a week.
