Description

A biennial, herbaceous plant with a strong taproot. The tree is thick, strong, hollow, 30-120 cm high, and branched in the flowering region. The lower leaves are simple, oblong-blade-shaped, on a young plant they are in a rosette. The flowers are bisexual, and yellow, grouped in wide, long (-50 cm) racemes. The fruit is a husk.   Originally from Southeast, Southwest, and Central Asia, it was grown as a garden plant to obtain dyes (indigo dye) for dyeing fabrics and was also a folk medicinal plant. In Europe, it began to be cultivated in 1550, more intensively between 1622 and 1742. Today it is no longer cultivated. It can be found sporadically on dry grassy slopes, beside roads, in ditches, on loess wastelands in vineyards, rarely in small grain crops on arable land, and in ruderal habitats around abandoned buildings. They do not form real populations, often scattered individuals or individual specimens appear in larger areas. It is unevenly distributed.

Transplant the plants outdoors when the danger of frost has passed. It is sown outdoors directly when the danger of frost has passed. Before sowing, keep the seeds in a moist substrate/sand in the refrigerator for 2-4 weeks.
