Description

Apium graveolens

Sometimes called ‘Salt Lake’ was originally developed in the region of the Great Salt Lake in Utah. Tall Utah has a compact habit with tightly folded hearts, and broad stringless stalks. The plants grow 45 to 60cm (18 to 24in) tall. Resistant to bolting, it is a good choice for short seasons because it can be harvested at any stage. Resistant to most common celery diseases, many subsequent resistant cultivars have been developed from their descendants.

Sowing: Celery needs light to germinate so sow seeds very shallowly. In cool climates, sow indoors, then moisten and cover with clear plastic. When celery leaves begin to emerge, remove the plastic cover and place the container in a sunny spot, always keeping the soil moist. When there are two true leaves, transplant outside when the soil has warmed and night temperatures have been above 40°.  Biennial, 100 days.
