Description
Family: Lythraceae
Genus: Lagerstroemia
Species: Indica
L.indica is a deciduous shrub or a lower tree (4-8m high, depending on the cultivar and the climate in which it is grown). It can be formed by pruning, also grateful for bonsai. It is said to be native to the Far East, from South China and Japan to northern Indochina (India is not mentioned), so it is a real subtropical species. It looks for acidic to neutral soil and sunny positions, although it can also tolerate partial shade (especially in drier climates). It blooms during summer and partly in autumn. It is pruned in autumn, and quite heavily.
